About Taebaek Mountain Range Conservation Area

The Taebaek Mountain Range extends over approximately 500 kilometers along the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula, predominantly spanning the Gangwon-do and North Gyeongsang provinces of South Korea. This conservation area safeguards critical forest ecosystems, rare alpine flora, and endemic wildlife thriving within elevations that reach up to 1,567 meters at the iconic Mount Seorak and beyond. The region features steep ridges, deep valleys, crystal-clear streams, and diverse habitats ranging from dense deciduous forests to subalpine zones. Historically, the mountains have been revered in Korean culture and house numerous ancient temples and shrines, adding cultural depth to visitor experiences. Outdoor recreationists are drawn to this area for its extensive hiking network, including parts of the Korea Baekdu-daegan Trail that follows the mountain spine, as well as opportunities for camping, wildlife watching, and winter sports such as snowshoeing and backcountry skiing. Notable landmarks include the Odaesan National Park section with its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation, the scenic Hwaeomsa Temple, and the rugged, scenic ridges surrounding Mount Taebaek. The conservation area's forests play a vital role in watershed protection, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity maintenance. Visitors appreciate the blend of natural beauty, tranquility, and cultural heritage, accessible through well-maintained trailheads and visitor centers while still offering remote wilderness experiences for seasoned explorers.
